  • Happy National Nurses Week 2020
    Updated On: May 05, 2020

    (May 5, 2020)

In This Briefing:  Happy National Nurses Week 2020

Every year, beginning May 6th through May 12th, we celebrate the very heart beat in our health care system; Nurses. This originated in celebration of Florence Nightingale’s amazing work, where she made great strides for such an admirable profession. All over the world, nurses are widely honored and put on a pedestal for this week.  However, when you really stop to think about what nurses truly do, we really should be celebrating them all year round. They are the ones that bring your medicine, check your vitals, and make sure your health is top notch. But, more than that, they are the ones that hold your hand during a procedure, make sure your overall perspective stays positive, and tend to your every need. They are the first ones there whether it be for help to the restroom or immediate need of pain relief, they never let us down.

We should even go as far to say that nurses are the ones that are healing humanity worldwide. They are the ones who are on the front lines every single day. With that being said, today, during this pandemic, they are the ones that continue to show up to work every day to make sure that we are all safe, healthy, and loved. They put their lives, and their families on the line every day to support those who need it most. They have been called to this career and they truly know what it means to sacrifice, but they also know the rewards of being in such an amazing field.

So, when you see a nurse this week, don't let the opportunity pass to say THANK YOU! Be sure to give them a smile, words of encouragement, or even just the acknowledgement that they truly deserve, because being completely honest, if it weren't for our amazing nursing staff, our health care would truly flat line.

On behalf of the AFGE/National Veterans Affairs Council, I would like to salute all our nurses who continue to serve our veterans every day in so many ways!  Happy Nurses Week!

Alma L. Lee, National VA Council, President
